Why You Shouldn't Wait Until the Offseason to Purchase Irrigation Software

By David Crary

irrigation softwareA lot of people tend to put things off until they have more time or more money.  For those in the field service industry, that usually means in the offseason.  But guess what?  You’re never going to have enough time or money to help your business grow.  Something will always come up and money will always be tight.

That is why you shouldn’t wait for the offseason to purchase irrigation software.  Too many factors can come up and there is no time like the present to start something new for your company.  Below are just a few reasons you should purchase software now, instead of in the offseason:

Start Growing Now – Why wait any longer to grow your business?  If the opportunity is available to you, you should take it.  The problem with waiting is that you have competitors out there that are not waiting.  They are taking steps every day to improve their business. So while you are sitting around waiting for the right time, they are gaining new customers.  Growth has to start somewhere, so might as well start now.

I wish that I had taken on more projects in the beginning of my irrigation business.  It seems like I always was putting things off and could have benefited more by taking on more and learning new processes.  I am not saying it would have been beneficial for the company if I was overwhelmed trying to learn every new thing that hit the field service industry, but my company could have benefited more from me being more proactive in certain areas.

Learning Curves – Are you an extremely tech savvy field service business?  If so, lucky you.  While the younger generations are coming in and grasping the newest devices and software out there quicker, there are still those who have been around since before cell phones and computers.  It can take some time to implement and learn a new system.  That being said, you want to start the process of purchasing software before your offseason so you have time to truly understand this new system.  There can be a lot of basic and hidden features that your company can benefit from, and having the time to get all of these set up for your company before the first start-up is scheduled will definitely lower the stress of a new season.

Jump Start for Next Year – If you can, I recommend purchasingirrigation software before your busy season is even close to being finished.  Try implementing the system midseason to see how it works with your company.  This way you have firsthand knowledge of how the system works within your company what needs to be worked out, which techs need more training, and what else you would like from the software.  I would start with one or two techs and office staff using the system.  This allows a good test to be done without completely overwhelming your business with a new system midseason.

The offseason is good for a lot of things.  It’s a good time to repair and replace equipment.  It’s a good time to restock the offices and supplies.  It is a good time to take a much deserved vacation after a hardworking season.  The offseason, however, is not the best time to implement field service software.  Can it be done?  Yes, but the benefits of starting early truly outweigh the costs.
